Should I Fix My Thermostat On My Own?

Should I Fix My Thermostat On My Own?

The thermostat is an important part of running an air conditioning and heating system in any home. However, if you are attempting to adjust the temperature on your thermostat but your HVAC system isn’t responding properly, then perhaps it is a sign of required repairs.

Checking for Issues with Your Thermostat

It is imperative to understand that HVAC systems are quite complex due to having a wide variety of parts. It is easy to assume that the thermostat is causing the issue, but perhaps it may be your air conditioning unit or furnace.

But before you call the professionals for help, you can perform the following troubleshooting techniques which won’t compromise your HVAC system:

  • Check the circuit breaker panel. While you may see a display on the thermostat, the circuit breaker for the AC or heating unit can still trip. This is a common way an HVAC system fails to turn on. Reset the breaker and try it again. If the breaker trips again, call for repairs.
  • Set your thermostat to the opposite setting you desire. For example, if you want heat, turn the thermostat up to the highest cooling temp. If nothing occurs within several minutes, then the issues are most likely the thermostat.
  • If you have a digital thermostat, change the batteries. If your digital thermostat is displaying a blank screen, just pry off the front cover and replace the batteries.

If you still can’t the HVAC system to work properly, then it is time to contact a licensed technician to resolve the issue. The technician can also determine if something else besides the thermostat is the issue.
