Top 4 Ways Indoor Temperature Impacts Children and Youth

When it comes to our kids, we always want what’s best; yet, we can’t possibly be experts in every department, niche field, or school subject. That’s why we, at 72 degrees Air Conditioning & Heating, are here to share our HVAC knowledge with you. This is our niche; and, as licensed HVAC technicians, we have extensive HVAC wisdom to pass down to all of you. Today, we are discussing how indoor temperature affects your kids.

When it comes to your children, you must adjust your indoor climate to meet their needs, as they inherently produce less body heat than you. When children live in a space where the climate is disagreeable, their mood, sleep, health, and schoolwork may be disrupted. Make sure your HVAC unit is running efficiently to prevent these negative outcomes.

Indoor Temperature & Your Child

Our environments play a huge role in our well-being; and, when temperatures exceed comfortable levels, our state of mind is affected. Children become extremely irritable in warmer climates and tend to express their discomfort through anger or violent behaviors.

The ideal indoor climate for children (and adults) is between 70 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the sun goes down, so should your thermostat. In order for all of us to fall asleep, our body temperatures need to drop. So, when bedtime rolls around, set your toddler’s room between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and put them in their favorite long sleeve and pant PJ set. This will provide the optimal sleeping conditions for an uninterrupted night of sleep.

Note: If you have a newborn, the temperature should be set between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

When your home’s indoor temperature is too low, your kids become increasingly susceptible to infections. It is more common for a child to catch a cold when in a cooler climate, as bacteria survive longer in low-temperature environments.

The low temperature itself is not responsible for the infection, but rather for the spread and survival of the bacteria that causes sickness. The ideal temperature for your home is between 70 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

School Work

The notion that individuals are more productive in cooler climates is false. Children thrive in comfortable, neutral environments, as they have a harder time regulating body heat.

When children are placed in colder environments, their recall skills and retention capabilities are impeded. When your child is studying or completing homework, set your thermostat between 70 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
