Ten to fifteen years is the standard range, but that figure assumes a temperate climate. In the Hill Country, where cooling season runs roughly seven months and systems run eighteen hours a day through summer, the realistic expectation sits toward the lower end unless the system is maintained.
Why Local Systems Work Harder
An air conditioner in Fredericksburg accumulates far more runtime hours than the same unit in a milder region. Between April and October it is doing real work, and during summer stretches it barely stops.
Every one of those hours is wear on a compressor, a blower motor, and a set of electrical components.
That is why the maintenance argument is stronger here than national averages suggest. A well-maintained system reaching fifteen years is common; a neglected one failing at nine is equally common, and the difference is almost entirely what happened between installations.
What Determines Which End You Land On
Refrigerant charge. A system running low operates the compressor hot and inadequately lubricated. Refrigerant is not consumed, so low charge means a leak — and topping it off without finding the leak is a delay the compressor pays for. This is the leading cause of premature failure.
Airflow. A clogged air filter or dirty evaporator coil causes the coil to freeze, which sends liquid refrigerant back to the compressor. Compressors do not survive that repeatedly.
Coil cleanliness. A condenser packed with cottonwood and dust cannot reject heat, so the compressor works against elevated head pressure every hour of a seven-month season.
Sizing. An oversized system short-cycles, and starting a compressor is the hardest moment in its operating life. Doing it several times an hour for a decade takes a toll.
Ductwork. Undersized returns force the blower against static pressure it was never designed for. Duct sealing genuinely extends equipment life by reducing runtime.
What Fails and When
Capacitors are first and most common — inexpensive, and left alone they destroy the motor they serve.
Contactors pit and fail. Fan motors wear out. Evaporator and condenser coils develop refrigerant leaks, more often as the system ages.
The compressor is usually last, and it typically determines when the system is finished, because on an out-of-warranty unit past twelve years the repair approaches a meaningful share of replacement.
The Refrigerant Complication
If your system uses R-22, production has ended and only reclaimed stock remains. On those systems a leak often becomes a replacement decision rather than a repair decision, because recharging costs a substantial fraction of a new system and the leak will recur.
R-410A is now being phased down as well, which affects longer-term planning on systems installed in the last fifteen years.
Signs You Are Nearing the End
Rising electric bills with no change in habits or rates. Longer run times for the same result. A system that struggles on days it used to handle comfortably. Repairs arriving in sequence on different components — parts of the same age wear out at similar rates.
Humidity is the other tell. A system that hits the setpoint but leaves the house feeling clammy has lost the ability to run long enough to dehumidify, and in a Texas summer that is a comfort failure even at the right temperature.
Extending What You Have
Annual AC maintenance in spring — before the first sustained heat — catches the failures above while they are still cheap parts.
Change filters on a real schedule rather than the package interval. Keep the outdoor unit clear of vegetation. Address duct problems, which reduce runtime directly.
