Filtration addresses a different problem than softening. If your complaint is taste, smell, cloudiness, or sediment — rather than spots and scale — a filter is what you need, and a water softener will not help.

Symptoms That Point to Filtration

A chlorine taste or smell is the most common municipal complaint. Chlorine is added deliberately to make water safe, and it does its job, but many people find the residual unpleasant. Filtration removes it after it has finished working.

A rotten-egg or sulfur smell usually indicates hydrogen sulfide, common in Hill Country well water. A metallic taste often means iron or manganese. An earthy or musty taste can come from organic matter in the source water.

Visible cloudiness or particles in a glass of water means sediment — sand, silt, or rust — which is especially common on wells and after any water main work in your neighborhood.

Orange or brown staining in sinks, tubs, and toilets is iron. Blue-green staining points to copper, often from acidic water attacking your pipes, which is a problem worth addressing for the plumbing’s sake as well.

Hardness Is Not a Filtration Problem

Worth being clear about, because it is the most common mix-up we encounter.

Spots on glassware, scale on fixtures, soap that will not lather, and stiff laundry are hardness — dissolved calcium and magnesium. Filters do not remove those. That requires a water softener or a salt-free water conditioner.

Homeowners who buy a filter to solve a spotting problem end up disappointed. Many homes need both, working on different problems.

Well Water Deserves Its Own Answer

If you are on a private well, nothing is treated before it reaches your house. There is no municipal system removing bacteria, adjusting pH, or filtering sediment.

Well supplies also vary dramatically from property to property — sometimes between neighbors on the same road, because they draw from different depths. Your neighbor’s treatment setup is not evidence of what you need.

Annual testing is genuinely important on a well, and it should cover bacteria, nitrates, and pH in addition to the aesthetic issues.

Whole House or Point of Use

This is the decision that determines cost, and it comes down to what you are trying to protect.

A whole house water filter treats everything entering the home — every tap, shower, and appliance. It is the right choice for sediment, chlorine, and odor issues, because those affect bathing and laundry as much as drinking.

A point-of-use system treats one fixture, usually the kitchen sink. A reverse osmosis system removes a far broader range of contaminants than whole-house filtration can economically, including dissolved solids, and it is the practical answer for drinking and cooking water.

Treating every gallon in the house to drinking-water standards is expensive and unnecessary, since you drink a tiny fraction of what you use. Most households are best served by whole-house filtration for the aesthetic and equipment-protection issues, plus RO at the kitchen sink.

Test Before You Buy

Different contaminants require different media. Carbon handles chlorine, taste, and odor. Sediment filters handle particulates. Iron removal, sulfur treatment, and pH correction each need specific equipment.

Buying a filter without knowing what is in your water is how people end up with equipment that does not fix the problem they bought it for. A water quality test gives you the actual numbers.

Municipal customers can also request their utility’s annual water quality report, which is a useful starting point — though it reflects the water leaving the treatment plant, not what arrives at your tap after traveling through the distribution system and your own pipes.

Maintenance Is Not Optional

Every filter has a service interval, and a neglected filter eventually makes water quality worse rather than better as trapped material accumulates and pressure drops.
