Yes, in high enough concentrations — but the realistic risk in a home is low, and it is worth understanding the actual mechanism rather than the headline. Refrigerant is dangerous mainly by displacing oxygen in an enclosed space, and secondarily through deliberate misuse.
How Refrigerant Actually Harms People
Freon is a trade name that has become a general term for refrigerant. In air conditioning it is sealed inside the system and, under normal operation, you never encounter it.
The primary hazard is asphyxiation. Refrigerant is heavier than air, so a large leak in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space displaces oxygen at floor level. Symptoms progress from dizziness and headache to shortness of breath, confusion, loss of coordination, and in extreme cases unconsciousness.
This is a realistic concern in a closed mechanical room, a garage, or a crawlspace — not in an open house with normal air movement.
The secondary hazard is cardiac. High-concentration exposure can sensitise the heart to adrenaline, which is why deliberate inhalation is genuinely lethal and why refrigerant misuse causes deaths every year.
The Realistic Home Scenario
In a typical Hill Country home, a refrigerant leak is far more likely to be a performance problem than a safety one.
Most leaks are slow — a fitting weeping over months, a coil developing a pinhole. The refrigerant disperses outdoors or into a well-ventilated space, and what you notice is declining cooling capacity, not a health effect.
The situations that raise real concern are a large, sudden release in a confined space: a line ruptured in a closed garage, or a leak in an equipment closet with no ventilation.
Warning Signs Worth Acting On
A chemical or slightly sweet odour near the indoor or outdoor unit. Hissing or bubbling near refrigerant lines, which indicates escaping gas under pressure. Ice forming on the lines or coil.
Oil residue is one of the more reliable indicators — refrigerant carries compressor oil, and at a leak point that oil is left behind as a dark, greasy film on the coil or at connections.
And the symptom pattern that matters: headache, dizziness, or nausea that improves when you leave the house and returns when you come back.
What to Do
If you suspect a significant leak, ventilate the area and leave. Open doors and windows on your way out if you can do so without delay.
Do not use flames or create sparks. Refrigerant exposed to an open flame can decompose into more toxic compounds.
If anyone is showing symptoms, get them to fresh air and call emergency services.
Then call for service. Do not try to locate or repair the leak yourself — refrigerant handling is federally regulated and requires EPA Section 608 certification.
Why a Leak Matters Even Without the Safety Angle
Refrigerant is not consumed. A system that is low has a leak, and that is the important thing to understand.
Running low means the compressor operates hot and inadequately lubricated. It is the leading cause of premature compressor failure, which is the most expensive repair in residential air conditioning.
This is why topping off a charge without finding the leak is a delay rather than a repair. On older R-22 systems the economics are worse still — production has ended, only reclaimed stock remains, and a recharge can cost a meaningful fraction of a new system.
Do Not Confuse This With Carbon Monoxide
Refrigerant and carbon monoxide are entirely different hazards, and the confusion is common.
Carbon monoxide comes from combustion — gas furnaces, water heaters, and other fuel-burning appliances. It is odorless, and it is the more common household danger. CO detectors do not detect refrigerant, and refrigerant leaks will not trigger them.
Every home with gas appliances needs working CO detectors regardless of anything on the cooling side. Annual furnace maintenance includes the heat exchanger inspection that catches CO risk.
