This is the headline benefit. A whole house fan is a fan motor rather than a refrigerant cycle, and it uses a small fraction of the electricity an air conditioning compressor does.
When conditions suit it — and in this region that means most evenings in April, May, September, and October, plus cool summer nights — the difference on a monthly bill is real.

It Flushes the Attic Too
The benefit people underestimate is what happens above the ceiling.
A whole house fan exhausts into the attic and out through the roof vents. That means it is not just cooling your living space — it is pulling the day’s accumulated heat out of the attic as well.
In a Hill Country home where ductwork runs through that attic, this matters the following morning. An attic that was flushed overnight starts the day cooler, so your air conditioning loses less to duct heat gain when it does come on.
Complete Air Exchange
Air conditioning recirculates the same air with the windows closed. That is efficient, but it means everything generated indoors accumulates — cooking odours, cleaning product vapours, off-gassing from furnishings, and carbon dioxide.
A whole house fan replaces the entire volume of air in the house within minutes. For homes that feel stale, this does something filtration cannot, because filters capture particles and do nothing about gases and vapours.
The indoor air quality benefit is genuine, with one caveat below.
Sleeping Comfort
Running the fan for an hour after sunset drops indoor temperature quickly and gives you moving air, which many people find more comfortable to sleep in than still conditioned air.
Multi-speed units let you run low and quiet overnight. In practice most homeowners use the low setting far more than they expected to.
The Honest Limitations
It requires open windows, which means outdoor humidity, dust, cedar pollen, and noise come in. For a household with seasonal allergies, running one during cedar season is counterproductive.
It adds humidity rather than removing it, so on a muggy evening the house can feel damp even at a lower temperature.
And it does nothing during a summer afternoon. It is a shoulder-season and overnight tool, not a replacement for air conditioning. Anyone selling it as one is setting you up for disappointment.
Attic Exhaust Decides Whether It Works
A whole house fan moves an enormous volume of air into the attic, and that air has to get out.
If net free vent area is inadequate, the fan cannot reach its rated airflow, the attic pressurises, and the unit runs loud and hot. The fan is not defective — the venting is.

Get the Damper Right
When the fan is off, that ceiling opening is a direct path between your conditioned space and the attic.
A cheap gravity louver seals poorly and leaks conditioned air all winter. An insulated, motorised damper closes tightly and carries insulation value of its own. The additional cost is modest; the difference over the life of the fan is not.
Not the Same as an Attic Fan
These get confused constantly. An attic fan exhausts only the attic with your windows closed. A whole house fan moves air through your living space. They are complementary rather than interchangeable.
Good insulation makes both more effective.
