Ten to fifteen years is typical for a well-maintained system. Some run longer. Softeners that never get serviced, or that are fighting iron and chlorine without help, frequently give up closer to eight.
What Wears Out First
Three components determine the lifespan of a water softener, and they fail on different schedules.
The resin bed does the actual ion exchange. It degrades gradually and typically lasts ten to fifteen years. When it is exhausted, the system will still run its regeneration cycle perfectly and deliver hard water — a genuinely confusing symptom, because everything appears to be working.
The control valve is the mechanical brain: motor, piston, seals, and the injector that draws brine. Seals and injectors are serviceable parts, and a valve rebuilt at year ten can carry a system several more years.
The tanks usually outlast both. Resin tanks rarely fail; brine tanks crack occasionally after long exposure.
Because these fail separately, a softener is often repairable rather than replaceable — right up until the point where resin and valve both need attention at once.
What Shortens Resin Life
Chlorine is the main culprit on municipal supplies. It oxidizes the resin beads over time, and homes with heavily chlorinated water see meaningfully shorter resin life.
Installing a carbon whole house water filter ahead of the softener removes chlorine before it reaches the resin, and it is one of the more effective ways to extend the softener’s life.
Iron is the culprit on well water. A softener removes some iron, but beyond a threshold the iron coats and fouls the resin, progressively destroying capacity. Orange staining plus a softener that keeps underperforming usually points here.
Sediment does the same thing mechanically, packing into the resin bed and reducing the surface available for exchange.
Sizing Affects Longevity
An undersized softener regenerates far more often than it should. Every regeneration cycle is wear on the valve, the seals, and the resin.
A system sized correctly for your measured hardness and household use regenerates on a reasonable interval and lasts accordingly. This is one of several reasons we test water quality before sizing rather than working from a regional average.
What Extends It
Keep salt in the tank and watch for bridging — a hardened crust that leaves an empty cavity beneath, so the salt never contacts water and the system quietly stops softening.
Clean the brine tank every year or two. Insoluble residue accumulates on the bottom and eventually interferes with brine draw. Higher-purity salt reduces how often this is needed.
Have the system serviced annually: resin sanitizing, injector and venturi cleaning, drain line and air gap check, seal inspection, and a water test to confirm the softener is actually delivering soft water rather than merely cycling.
That last item is what catches declining resin before you notice symptoms.
Update the Programming
The control valve is set to your hardness and household size, and both change over time. A system programmed for a family of five and now serving two regenerates far more often than necessary — wasting salt, water, and valve life for years.

When to Replace
Replacement makes more sense than repair when the resin is exhausted and the valve is also failing, when the unit is badly undersized for your actual hardness, or when it is past fifteen years and problems are arriving in sequence.
Newer metered systems also use considerably less salt and water than older timer-based units, so the operating cost difference partly offsets the purchase.
If you are replacing anyway, it is worth asking whether a salt-free water conditioner fits your situation — though it prevents scale rather than softening water.
