Very little, which is the main reason people choose it. A salt-free conditioning system needs a media replacement every several years and a periodic check that the sediment pre-filter has not loaded up. There is no salt to buy, no brine tank to clean, and no regeneration cycle to monitor.

Media Replacement

The catalytic media inside a water conditioner is what converts dissolved hardness minerals into crystals that will not adhere to surfaces. It does not get consumed the way salt does, but its surface gradually loses effectiveness.

Replacement intervals vary by manufacturer and by how hard your water is — typically several years, sometimes considerably longer. Harder water works the media harder.

This is the one significant service item, and it is straightforward: the vessel is opened, spent media removed, fresh media loaded, and the system flushed.

The Pre-Filter Matters More Than People Expect

Most conditioning systems include or should include a sediment pre-filter ahead of the media.

That filter protects the catalytic media from particulates that would coat its surface and block the nucleation sites that make the whole process work. A clogged or absent pre-filter is the most common reason a conditioner stops performing.

Cartridge changes typically fall in the six-to-twelve month range depending on your sediment load. On well water it is usually the shorter end.

Iron Is the Thing to Watch

Iron fouls catalytic media and progressively destroys its effectiveness. On Hill Country wells this is the most common cause of a conditioning system that underdelivers.

If you are seeing orange staining alongside declining scale protection, the answer is usually dedicated iron treatment ahead of the conditioner rather than servicing the conditioner itself.

Testing water quality periodically is what identifies this before the media is ruined.

How to Tell It Is Still Working

This is genuinely harder than with a softener, and it trips people up.

A softener can be checked with a hardness test — soft water reads near zero. A conditioner leaves the minerals in the water, so a hardness test will still read hard even when the system is working perfectly. That is expected, not a failure.

What you actually monitor is scale formation. Watch your faucet aerators and showerheads. If crust starts reappearing after a period of being clear, the media is losing effectiveness.

Your water heater tells you too — new popping or rumbling means sediment is accumulating again.

Annual Check

An annual visit covers inspecting the media condition, changing the sediment pre-filter, checking for pressure drop across the system, verifying flow rate against the unit’s rating, and testing the incoming water for changes.

Pressure drop is a useful early indicator. A rising drop across the vessel usually means the media bed is fouling or the pre-filter needs attention.

Compared to Softener Maintenance

The contrast is the selling point. A water softener needs monthly salt checks, watching for salt bridging, annual brine tank cleaning, resin sanitizing, and injector service.

A conditioner needs a filter cartridge and a media change every few years.

For second homes, rental properties, and households that would rather not think about it, that difference is the entire reason to choose conditioning — provided you understand it prevents scale rather than softening water.

Existing Scale

One thing maintenance will not do is reverse buildup that formed before the system was installed. If your water heater has years of sediment in it, a flush during water heater maintenance is the faster route to recovering that capacity.

Putting It on a Schedule

The realistic failure mode with low-maintenance equipment is forgetting it exists. Because it demands nothing month to month, the media change tends to slip by years.
